WILLIAMTOWN Rural Fire Service is proud to have an award winning volunteer amongst its ranks.

Sixteen-year-old Alexander Slade was recently awarded the ‘Young Volunteer of the Year (12-15)’ at a ceremony at Parliament House in Sydney, presented by the NSW RFS Commissioner, Shane Fitzsimmons.

Alexander was chosen for the award following his dedication and efforts with his local station during emergency events.

At just 15, Alexander wasn’t old enough to fight fires at the fire ground with his station mates during the Salt Ash fire of 2015.

Instead of returning home and waiting until he was old enough to properly join in, he organised relief crews and changeovers for the station, with zero peer assistance.

Alexander, now 16,  has a clear message to share with young people in our community, following his prestigious award win.

“I’d like to tell all young people to give the volunteer fire service a go, it really is a fantastic thing to be involved with.”

“I urge people to join their local brigade, because the enjoyment we get from helping others is amazing.”

Alexander’s parents Andrew and Susan, both volunteer, as does his sister Aimee, making it a real family commitment.

Our local brigades rely on so many people to fulfill a range of important roles, so no matter what your experience, there’s a role for everyone.

Whether it be firefighting, administration, catering, equipment maintenance or community education, everyone is needed.

Each brigade provides training and education opportunities to all members free of charge, giving you the knowledge and skills to work safely.

Once trained, your brigade will arrange the appropriate personal protective clothing and equipment required for your role.
