The project has been supported by a wide range of community groups and businesses, including Soldiers Point Marina, Friends With Dignity, The Rotary Club of Nelson Bay, and Club Lemon Tree. Lynn Vatner of the Yacaaba Centre told News Of The Area, “We are at a point where women will be housed in the three new units by September.” Friends With Dignity have offered their services to assist with the furnishing of the units. “These three new units will add to the one house and two brick units already on the site.” The units will be housing middle aged women who are the fastest growing cohort of homelessness in Australia. “It comes back to these women having to survive on Newstart, and pay rent in an area like this, costs so much, they can’t surf couch like young people and they need time to get back on their feet.” The Yacaaba Centre is offering this housing to women who are connected to the area, and have social contact. Those who use the housing must stay in contact and access the services of the Yacaaba Centre services. “Escaping a bad situation and being on their own is better than being with someone who is causing these women so much pain,” she said.
