AFTER more than 70 years of existence as an iconic beachside building, the former Woolgoolga Surf Life Saving Club was physically demolished on Friday 12 February.

Coffs Harbour Demolitions undertook the demolition of the former surf lifesaving club, which included the removal of asbestos, over a two-week period with initial demolition works commencing on February 1.

The building was to be demolished in November 2020, but was pushed back due to community concern over the demolition of the historic building.

The former club had become severely dilapidated over the years and contained asbestos.

The longstanding surf club was replaced by the new and improved $3.9 million Woolgoolga Surf Life Saving Club in September 2020, which is located just south of the former club.

Once the demolition fencing is removed and all the rubble from the old surf club relocated, the NSW Crown land beneath the former surf club will be graded and re-turfed to create an open community lawn area for the public to use as parkland, and will form part of Coffs Harbour City Council’s current Woolgoolga Beach Reserve revitalisation works being undertaken in the adjoining area.
