FOR 49 years the Lions’ Youth of the Year Quest has been running throughout Lions Clubs Australia-wide.

This year was no different, and three local students entered in the quest locally, from Nambucca Heads High School and the Christian Community School.

Seminars were held in late November 2021 to inform the interested students about the Quest.

Hayden Bailey, Lystan Scott and Rohan Shelton firstly attended a 40 minute interview and then answered two impromptu questions.

They had two minutes to answer each question.

The questions were:
1.There is no place like home – please discuss.
2. Integrity and honesty should be required of our politicians – please comment.

Each entrant was required to then present a five-minute prepared speech at a public speaking evening on 22 February.

Mr Grahame Beatton from the Nambucca Heads Lions Club said, “The quest focuses on recognising and developing “leadership in young people aged 15 to 19 years of age.

“Entrants need to demonstrate academic achievements as well as skills in leadership, sportsmanship, public “speaking and community involvement.”

On 22 February, Hayden Bailey was awarded the overall winner, with Lystan Scott winning the award for best public speaker.

“The value of the Quest in developing and recognising important skills in these young leaders is widely recognised “and will hold the participants in good stead in their future endeavours,” said Mr Beatton.

Rohan Shelton will represent the Nambucca Heads Lions Club at the next level of the quest, owing to Hayden being unavailable to attend.

The Nambucca Heads Lions Club acknowledged the great support given to the students by their schools and teachers when they were preparing and participating in the Quest.
