Most of the timber planks from the walkway are missing, exposing nails and oyster shells.
The viewing platform is rotting with timber planks also missing or underwater.
The orange safety net is broken and submerged and there are no warning signs in place. Although the dirt road from Winda Woppa Park out the Peninsula is closed to traffic due to sand transfer operations, the track remains very popular for walkers and bike riders.
Visitors are attracted to the lagoon’s abundance of local birdlife and mangrove swamps.
Residents are very keen to have the walkway and viewing platform repaired.
One regular walker observed said, “The sand transfer operations should not provide any reason to let the lagoon viewing platform fall apart like this. It’s dangerous and only a matter of time before someone gets hurt.”
The MidCoast Council has been contacted about the risk and their assistance sought about repairing the viewing platform for Summer.
