‘When you were a boy’: a poem by Woolgoolga’s Barbara Gilkes Opinion by News Of The Area - Modern Media - February 12, 2022 WHEN you were a little boy, Lord, before the world began, did THE FATHER allow you to be a child before you became a man? Did you unlock the jungles of Africa and set the Elephants free? Did you sweep the ocean beaches clean sending Dolphins off on a spree? Did you colour the beautiful Butterflies? Did you teach the Birds how to sing? Did you give them a wonderful melody to lighten our hearts, each spring? It brings such joy in to the world when chicks hatch out, and fly; and offer their colourful songs of praise sent up to YOU on high. Do you straddle the clouds aove, LORD and look down on YOUR WORLD, below? Do you weep at the way we’re mistreating it? It must be such a blow to see how greed, and wealth, and power have triumphed over LOVE, unlike the everlasting light streamed down from HEAVEN above. Do you long for the days when you were a child, a time when you named each tree, and unlocked the jungles of Africa, and set the Elephants free? By Barbara GILKES, Woolgoolga
