MANNING Valley & Area Community Transport in conjunction with Bulahdelah Bowling Club are now running a weekly shopping bus service in the local area.

The Community Shopping Bus operates every Thursday taking people directly from their homes to the shops in Bulahdelah.

The bus normally picks up from homes between 9:30 and 11.00am with a passenger attendant on board to help those who need assistance.

A small fee of $5 for the return trip helps cover the running costs of the program.

Community Transport CEO Jennifer Hadfield said the program allows people who are isolated to be able to come into Bulahdelah and do their shopping.

“People who lack mobility or are otherwise isolated now have a means of getting into town to go shopping or do other things like going to the dentist,” Ms Hadfield said.

“It is a good social opportunity and keeps people connected through interactions with each other on the bus.”

Bowling Club Manager Allan Freihaut said the club became involved to provide a service for the ageing population.

“There is lack of appropriate public transport in the area and there are many people who can’t get around,” Mr Freihaut said.

“With the growing need for transport in the community, we’ve donated the use of our bus.”

Bulahdelah Health Committee member Garry Haynes said a lot of people have worked very hard in setting up this community service.

“This all came through identifying a need, which was without public transport or a taxi service, many people were unable to get into town,” Mr Haynes said.

“Many people have already taken the opportunity to use the bus regularly and enjoy the day out.”

Mr Haynes said in order to keep the valued community service working, it needs to be supported.
