Wear it Purple celebrates valuing diversity and inclusion

Giving a loud and clear message that they support the young rainbow community, Coffs Harbour Neighbourhood Centre volunteers Ippsita, Anna, Del, Natasha and Donna supported Wear it Purple Day.

SUPPORTING Wear it Purple Day on 26 August, Coffs Harbour Neighbourhood Centre celebrated the day founded in response to the number of young people who took their own lives following bullying and harassment which resulted from lack of acceptance of their sexuality or gender identity.

By wearing purple, the team at Coffs Harbour Neighbourhood Centre supported awareness and conversation that Coffs Harbour shares values in celebrating and valuing diversity and inclusion throughout our communities, organisations and relationships.

It raises awareness about sexuality, sex and gender identity and challenges harmful social cultures.

“When people or communities refuse to accept people for who they are or try to change them, it plays a role in creating an environment which significantly puts them at risk of depression,” Di Woods, Manager at CHNC told News Of The Area.

“For young people who have supportive connections and a community that supports them, it helps them to generate greater well-being and significantly reduces overall health and mental health problems.

“Our rainbow youth are a valued and active part of our community.

“While showing our support is obviously more than one day, this is a way we can ensure they see and hear our support,” said Di.

“It is important that we send a loud clear message and stand up as role-models to help our young people establish confidence to be who they are.”

Wear it Purple was founded in 2010 to show young people that there are people who support and accept them and that they have the right to be proud of who they are.

Coffs Harbour Neighbourhood Centre promotes equity and inclusivity.

“On Wear it Purple day at CHNC community members shared purple cupcakes, were offered to have their nails painted or hair sprayed purple.”
