The Mark Hughes Foundation is aiming to raise $2 million dollars for research into finding a cure for Brain Cancer, and they have achieved $1.7 million of that goal so far.

Mark Hughes was a Newcastle Knights player from 1997 until 2005.

When he was diagnosed in 2013 with brain cancer, Mark was overwhelmed by the support of his family, friends and community.

As a way of repaying those who had helped him, and to help others in his position, Mark and his wife launched the Mark Hughes Foundation.

Brain cancer kills more children than any other disease, and kills more people under 40 in Australia than any other cancer, yet it receives less than five percent of government cancer research funding.

Beanies for Brain cancer was launched to help combat this appalling lack of funding and raise much needed funds to find a cure for brain cancer, create awareness and support brain cancer patients and their families.

Medowie Woolworths jumped on board this year, as have other local businesses and preschools.
Woolworths representative, Jacquie Cox told News Of The Area, “We are so pleased with the response from the community, selling out in a matter of days.”

“Brain cancer is such an insidious disease, and it has unfortunately touched the lives of quite a few locals.”

“We’re doing what we can to help raise much needed funds,” she said.

The Mark Hughes Foundation beanies have all but sold out nationwide, with a team of volunteers packing and posting around the clock to clear over 100,000 online beanie orders out to their new homes.

On Thursday 22 June, make sure you come to Medowie Woolworths, where special guest Mark Hughes will be visiting instore to promote his foundation and have a meet and greet with locals.
