Email us – media@newsofthearea.com.au Run by volunteers and catering to the local audience, the radio station delivers a selection of mostly 50’s – 80’s music. The organisation recently conducted a survey which they believe shows that the station and its volunteers shine. 400 randomly selected residents were surveyed between Tomaree Head and Lemon Tree Passage. Of these surveyed, 323 respondents were aged over 50 years old. 66% of respondents were aged over 60 years of age with 43% of respondents aged over 70 years of age. It is in this age group where Port Stephens FM appear to do well. 19% of respondents were aged under 49 years of age. The independent research report showed that “From Tomaree Head to Lemon Tree Passage, your Community radio station, Port Stephens FM, is the most listened-to.” The station’s strategy of targeting the more mature age group is clearly effective and this is reflected in the survey results. Whilst the station does have a number of more specialist programs, the main focus during prime listening hours is on rock and pop music from the 60’s through to the 80’s – the exact preference of its listeners, as the survey results show. The emphasis on Australian content was also appreciated by its listeners. What appealed most to listeners was the mix of music that the station played and the fact that it was local and had news and information on things happening in our immediate area. Listeners also commented positively on the quality of the local presenters, all of whom are volunteers. Port Stephens FM broadcast from a studio located at Salamander Bay in rooms adjacent to the Tomaree Library. The team at Port Stephens FM are proud of the results that the survey has revealed.
