Photo by: Ian Mackenzie-Smith A Group of 25 refugee children from Vietnam enjoyed the sights and sounds of the Myall Coast last weekend. The children, aged between seven and 15, made the visit as part of an excursion from Sydney. As children of Vietnamese families recently arrived in Australia, they are part of a program that is helping them integrate into our community and the Aussie way of life. Hosted by Lyn Chaikin at her Tea Gardens Family Camp in Gams Road, the group spent three days in the area experiencing the local sights, bonding with each other and gaining confidence in themselves. On Saturday morning, the group visited the Great Aussie Bush Camp near The Rock and then travelled to the Mungo Brush Camping Area for a barbecue lunch cooked by members of the local Rotary Club. After a swim in the lake, everyone went climbing the sandhills at Dark Point, ending an exhausting day. Sunday morning involved a walk along Bennetts Beach and watching the Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Surf Lifesaving Nippers undergoing their training session. It was the first visit away from Sydney for most of the students. They felt really privileged to be part of the program and very excited to be part of the Australian community. It was a truly worthwhile and positive program for students and volunteers alike.
