THE service for Vietnam Veterans Day in Medowie was a special event, with a sizable turnout from community members, RAAF personnel, decorated Defence members, returned service men and women, our Federal member, Councillors and students from all three Medowie Schools.

Member for Paterson, Meryl Swanson, presented a sapling from the seed of the Lone Pine to the Medowie RSL sub-branch, speaking to the crowd about the special significance of this small sapling.

Neil Biggar, Secretary of the Medowie RSL sub-Branch, told News Of The Area that they were delighted to accept the sapling, that will be planted in a special place at the new Medowie Sports and Community Club.

“The sub-Branch has always been a supporter of the Club, and looks forward to being able to hold meetings at the Club, which will hopefully be an incentive for more Medowie ex-service people to join the RSL, as well as become members of the Club.” Neil said.

“The Medowie RSL also looks forward to being able to conduct some of its veterans’ assistance work from the Club’s meeting rooms, which is exciting us.” he added.

The three Medowie schools were well represented, with students behaving in a manner their schools should be extremely proud of.

Wirreanda Public School has the largest defence student population, with over 200 students from defence families.

The Defence School Liaison Officer, Karen Schieb, told News Of The Area, “It is wonderful to see the Defence community spirit in Medowie.”

“We are so proud of what our Defence families bring to Medowie, and that the community embraces them.”

Moving words from several speakers during the services set the scene for reflection on the sacrifices our service men and women made during the Vietnam War, and their fight for recognition upon their return home, and for many years afterward.

News Of The Area would like to take this opportunity to thank our returned servicemen for their sacrifices and service, and congratulates Medowie RSL sub-branch for their moving and emotive service.
