Two Tea Gardens Coral Trees will go mid June MidCoast LGA (overall news) by NOTA - June 9, 2015 Great Lakes Council has planned the removal of two Coral Trees (Erythrina x sykesii) along Marine Drive Tea Gardens (between Maxwell and Ogden Streets) during the week commencing 15 June 2015. Council had originally proposed to remove these identified environmental weeds back in November last year, however due to community concern, removal was deferred. Since this deferral, Council has met with various community groups and local residents to develop the ‘Marine Drive Foreshore Reference Group’ to discuss the future of the foreshore. Council’s Manager of Parks and Recreation, Mr Andrew Staniland said, “The Foreshore Reference group is highly motivated to see improvements to the area relating to facilities, landscape shade trees and creating a community feel to this highly used area. Council is excited to work with this group to implement improvements to the foreshore.” “Unfortunately due to a combination of circumstances including the age of the trees and the risk of failure, the coral trees will need to be removed. Council has listened to the community, and will stage the removal of the trees while implementing replacement trees,” said Mr Staniland. Council is committed to working with the community Foreshore Reference group to see the improvements carried out on the foreshore.
