Or media@newsofthearea.com.au Or CLICK FOR ADVERT QUOTE Just before 10.30pm yesterday (Friday 12 May 2017), officers attached to Port Stephens Local Area Command were patrolling Shoal Bay Road, Shoal Bay. Police observed a man talking to a woman, before the sergeant approached to speak to him about his behaviour. The man became aggressive, and without provocation punched the sergeant in the head. Both fell to the ground in a violent struggle. Another police officer came to assist the sergeant and during this time it’s believed another unknown male became involved and allegedly kicked the sergeant in the head while he was on the ground and then fled the area. With the assistance of nearby security officers, a 19-year-old man was arrested and taken to Raymond Terrace Police Station. He was charged with assault police officer occasioning actual bodily harm and resist arrest. The sergeant was treated by NSW Ambulance officers, before being taken to Mater Hospital with an arm injury and concussion and is now on sick leave. The other officer did not require treatment. The 19-year-old man was granted conditional bail to appear at Raymond Terrace Local Court on Monday 19 June 2017. Inquiries are continuing.
