More than 30 people perished in the accident, made up predominantly of schoolchildren as well as their two teachers and the bus driver. Only three students survived the accident. Lauren and her family first became involved with wanting to help African children and their communities after a talk at their church. They were moved to bring about change, and joined a mission trip to Arusha to visit the families’ sponsor children. Upon their return home, Lauren and her daughter Gemma were inspired by their trip to beginning planning for a bigger goal, the establishment of an orphanage in Arusha by the end of 2018. Currently, all fundraising funds are pooled into an account and sent to Arusha to cover the needs of students. Their most recent achievement was putting Arusha student Andrew Mwakabana through University. Andrew is now in his final semester of a social work degree and will head up the orphanage when it opens. With the news of the distressing accident involving the Lucky Vincent School students, their fundraising plans have been given an extra focus on top of their current efforts. Lauren and her family are currently raising funds to cover the medical costs of the three surviving students. Lauren told News Of The Area, “We will also be providing support for the widows of the teachers who were killed in the accident and the families of the children who didn’t survive.” “We will be supporting these widows to start businesses or learn a trade that will help them to continue supporting their families after the loss of their husbands.” “The work we are doing is making a massive difference,” she said. Every dollar counts towards helping these children.
