FORTY-eight Tomaree Ladies Probus Club members, and many other Bay Probus friends, thoroughly enjoyed their day doing a cook’s tour of the progress along Newcastle Foreshore before visiting the Broadmeadow Base of Westpac Rescue Helicopters.

Over delicious tea, coffee and scones provided by the volunteers, Adam Tyirell presented a humorous account of the work achieved at the Base along with an endearing video.

A generous donation was given from the group to assist funding this important rescue work.

Westpac Rescue Helicopters rely on the generosity of the community to do the work that they do.

No one has ever had to pay to be assisted by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service.

This is because people in our community, along with the NSW Government, through NSW Health and NSW Ambulance, provide the funds to ensure the rescue helicopters are there when, and where, they are needed.

Lunch was at Awaba House, overlooking the beautiful views of Lake Macquarie.

As one of the oldest estates in the area, Awaba House and surrounds are steeped in history.

Awaba House is an elegant design by Edwin Sara, a noted Newcastle architect, and was home to the Braye family until the Hospitals Commission of New South Wales resumed the site in 1958.

However, no hospital was built, and after many tenants and periods of neglect, Lake Macquarie City Council purchased the site in 1993 and it began its transition into the special destination it is today.

After lunch, many took the opportunity to visit the adjoining Art Gallery, or walk along the foreshore to Marmong Point.
The day trip was very capably organised by Tricia Diemar.
