BY the time you have read this article, three brave Tilligerry ladies would have lost their precious locks as part of ‘The World’s Greatest Shave’ initiative. Or CLICK FOR ADVERT QUOTE It is very much an awareness thing as well as a cancer fundraising effort and the ladies have diverse reasons for taking part. The Oyster Shack’s Kate Slater lost her husband Garry two years ago to cancer. As a tribute to his memory and as a ‘Thank You’ to the caring medicos at Newcastle Private Hospital, she has organised a major fundraising day, the highlight of which will see her shorn. On the other hand, Tanilba’s Marilyn Sharp had one of those ‘light bulb’ moments while walking home. She decided there and then to join in as a tribute to the memory of her son Tui who was taken by cancer at the age of just 22. Marilyn herself is a survivor of ovarian cancer and lost her hair as part of a Chemotherapy program which saved her life. “There must be a cure out there and we need to support the researchers as much as we can,” she said. “I’d like to give heartfelt thanks to my sponsors and in particular Vanessa from ‘Hair on the Move’ for volunteering to get on the business end of the clippers,” she said. Loreto Gray is no stranger to having her head shaved, in fact this will be her twelfth time. She too suffered the indignity of losing her hair as part of her cancer treatment and would like to assure those facing the battle to be confident. “There is a bright future out there so be positive about the journey you have ahead of you,” she said. “Awareness is the name of the game as far as I’m concerned.” News Of The Area caught up with Loreto on the day she notched up 100kms at the Tilligerry Aquatic Centre. Her name will now be highlighted on the ‘Lap It Up’ honour board. She is fit, healthy and determined to keep it that way. News Of The Area will update you with the total monies raised by the trio.
