Thursday Walkers stepping back into History with Elvis

ELVIS Presley on at the drive in, watched from the rear of an FJ Holden ute; maypole dancers in the high Street; graphic images from Gallipoli, a thong wearing Aussie Santa accompanied by his boomers.

And that’s just for starters.

Where are we?

Kurri Kurri NSW.

Yes that’s right, the town that we drive through on our way to the Hunter vineyards is home to a treasure trove of over 50 murals beautifully painted on the outside of buildings throughout the town.

On Thursday 23 June around thirty Thursday Walkers headed down the highway to undertake a walking tour of the Kurri Kurri murals.

Dennis the Concretor

We were met by Debbie who was a gold mine of information as she guided us around the town to look at the murals. The murals portray people, events and places that shaped the history of the town and surrounding areas.

It’s a walking history tour. Every mural contains a kookaburra. Some are easy to find but others are a challenge.

The eagle eyed among the walkers of course rose to the challenge.

The Kurri Kurri Visitor Information Centre in the main street has information pamphlets and a map of the Mural walk.
