As you’d expect they marked the occasion with a walk at Tahlee.

“Forty-two walkers participated in the day at Tahlee, with most walking up and around Prayer Mountains on the grounds of the Tahlee Ministries,” Cherry Hughes told News Of The Area.

The group has come a long way in three decades.

“The original group of five walkers has become 100, though of course not that many turn up each week,” Cherry said.

The original group, going by the name of “Walking for Pleasure” was a Department of Health initiative started in 1987 to encourage people aged over 50 to get some regular exercise.

“Di Vercoe, Pat Pritchard, Shirley Andrews and Helen Macguire, who came to Tahlee last week, were some of the original members to walk under the Thursday Walkers banner in 1991,” Cherry said.

“Helen led us up the steep tracks of the mountain; what else could we do but follow.”

The walkers range in age from 50 something to 80 something and new members are always welcome.

Cherry added, “It’s all about the journey, the company and exploring the beauty of the area in which we live.”
