Recently thieves have preyed on isolated locations and facilities that spend much of the time unmanned. After the most recent robbery at the Grahamstown Dam Sailing and Aquatic Centre in the early hours of 1 December, Secretary of Port Stephens Sailability, Mr Richard Byrne said, “Seeing how the thieves got in there and then into our shed makes wonder: just how do you keep people out?” Using the very rope that helped store the equipment, thieves tied as much as they could to steal the 15 foot Quintrex launch. Kayaks, compressors, paddles, battery charges, right down to the most insignificant plastics dustpan were stolen. Attaching the boat trailer to the Club’s tractor the thieves then proceeded to drive through a gap in the fence. They then snuck down on the grass alongside the Campvale Pumping Station towards Richardson Road. Fortunately the thieves drove into a ditch and got the tractor bogged. Unable to get it out they abandoned the robbery and fled the scene. With the help of the Hunter Water Ranger, members of Sailability Port Stephens were able to recovered both tractor and boat and all the equipment. The tractor is a vital assets for Sailability, providing the means to launch the safety boat supplied by Port Stephens Council for their children from special needs classes and adults from day care centres and group homes. Mr Byrne told News of the Area, “We were very lucky to recover everything.” “Security has now been improved.” Police are continuing with their investigations. Maybe supply of security camera with motion sensor equipment linked to local command or fire station that is monitored, may not deter the unwanted but peace of mind you may get footage for later arrest.
