With the Open Women’s Pro-AM and Kaos Surf PRD Cadet Cup already contested over the weekend.
The Open Women’s Pro-AM and Kaos Surf PRD Cadet Cup events gave amateur women and promising junior stars the opportunity to rub shoulders with some of the biggest names in women’s surfing.
“The Open Women’s Pro-AM and Kaos Surf PRD Cadet Cup saw a fierce competition ahead of the upcoming WSL QS divisions,” said Surfing NSW CEO Luke Madden.
“It is important for Surfing NSW to not only support the elite tier of surfers but also get the grommets involved and showcase them to the world on the opening weekend of the Port Stephens Toyota Pro.
“A huge thanks goes out to the local community, in particular, PRD and Kaos Surf for making this event become a reality,” he said.
There should be some excellent spectating in the coming days with the elite World Surf League (WSL) QS competitions being held from the 8 – 13 November.
This event will comprise of Women’s 6,000 and Men’s 1,000 rated divisions and provide the women with a healthy boost of points to finish their 2018 QS campaigns.
The Bay’s Mike Clayton-Brown led the under 16 boys in the Kaos Surf PRD Cadet Cup after the first heat and won his category in the punchy and fun 3 foot surf at Birubi Beach over the weekend.
The Bays Clayton-Brown certainly has the makings for a bright future in the sport,
Ethan Smith of Surfing NSW told News Of The Area, “After taking out the Rip Curl GromSearch Final and the NSW Junior Title earlier this year, and now the Kaos Surf PRD Cadet Cup, Mike Clayton-Brown has truly cemented himself as one of the best Juniors in the country who is capable of taking down the fiercest competitors.
“His surfing has grown exponentially over the last 18 months and if he keeps progressing at this rate, then it’ll be interesting to see where he is in five years,” he said.
In the Open Women’s event Amuro Tsuzuki of Japan used her Open Women’s Pro-AM campaign as preparation for the upcoming 2018 Port Stephens Toyota Pro World Surf League (WSL) Qualifying Series (QS) competition as she tore apart all the rounds of competition.
Tsuzuki came up against some stiff competition in the form of locals Elle Clayton-Brown and Jasmine Sampson and Northern Beaches native Lily Macdonald but was able to get the nod thanks to a solid 16.5 two-wave heat total.
