Uniting and Community Housing Industry Association NSW have developed the toolkit to build the capacity of Community Housing Providers (CHP) like Mission Australia Housing.

It aims to support older tenants and provide effective housing services to tenants as they age.

Mission Australia Housing’s Jesse Taylor told News of The Area that many older people know that safe and secure housing is an essential factor in whether they will be able to manage and live well.

“For older people experiencing financial strain or surviving on social security payments like the age pension, more social and affordable housing in the region is crucial.

“Housing first, and ensuring tenants have the wrap-around support they need to work through challenges is important in breaking the cycle of homelessness.”

More than one hundred and forty seven people aged fifty five and over experience homelessness on any given night in the Coffs Harbour – Grafton area, with many more at risk of homelessness.

“As part of Mission Australia Housing’s work on the Mid North Coast, we are in the process of constructing a complex of forty one-bedroom social home apartments at Duke St in Coffs Harbour’s CBD.

“Close to local shops and services, the self-contained units will provide 40 individuals, particularly older people, with a safe, secure place to call home.”

The forty new one-bedroom social home apartments are currently under construction and are set to be completed in 2021.

At full capacity the complex will house 40 individuals in need of a safe, secure place to call home.

Contributing to the stock of much needed social and affordable housing for those who are homeless or at risk of homelessness in the region, the development is part of Mission Australia Housing’s footprint of more than one thousand,four hundred and twenty eight social and affordable homes across the Mid North Coast.
