Each month the Centre honours three members with the privilege of showing their talent by having a dedicated area of the gallery in which to feature their work.

There’s plenty of potters at the Centre and the facility has great resources for those who like to go a bit “potty”.

The current Feature Potter is member Milja Phillipson who was born in Amsterdam, and has been a keen Ceramics artist for the last 30 years.

Milja has Been interested in all types of mediums including photography, printing (lino-cutting), 3D paper sculpture, ceramics and card making,

Within the exhibition Milja has included a series using all mediums showcasing a single subject, “Our beloved Magpie”.

As an artisan Milja is extremely creative and versatile artist.

Photography and Ceramics have always dominated Milja’s life and she attended a number of courses at TAFE after a long nursing career.

Milja’s father was a well-known potter and art teacher who gave her much inspiration as did Michael Wein from the art centre’s pottery group, particularly with Raku firing.

Throughout her time as an artist Milja has many achievements including winning the Currabubula Art Show in ceramics, the Shoal Bay school for photography and ceramics, the Tilligerry Art Show for her paper sculpture, which won the people’s choice award, and Port Stephens Art Prize for printing. Milja has enjoyed being an active member of the Arts Centre for over twenty years and is the official photographer for the Arts Centre diligently been recording the Centres photographic history.

Admission is to the Port Stephens Community Arts Centre is free.

Meryl Miller told News Of The Area, “The Port Stephens Community Arts Centre is a member based organisation which holds many workshops and group art sessions.”
