A FIRST in the National Cartoon Gallery’s history saw the opening of an exhibition titled ‘The Morrison Years’, featuring works depicting the Prime Minister’s past years in office.

The exhibition features cartoons by three leading and award-winning national cartoonists: The Daily Telegraph’s Warren Brown, Sydney Morning Herald and Age cartoonist Cathy Wilcox and the Financial Review’s David Rowe.

Cathy Wilcox and David Rowe were in Coffs Harbour last Friday, 11 March, at The National Cartoon Gallery for the opening and were delighted to see the finished exhibition.

They were particularly enthused by the Gallery’s innovation of getting copies of their daily cartoons at the same time as they are sent to their various newspapers.

This enables the Gallery to have their latest cartoons on display, literally an hour or so after they appear in their major national and metropolitan newspapers.

“This is the first time in Australia that an exhibition could offer its visitors this level of immediacy,” Paul McKeon, Chairman, The National Cartoon Gallery at The Bunker told News Of The Area.

Lindsay Foyle, another top cartoonist, commenting on the timeliness of the cartoons’ appearance at the gallery, said that “cartoons are mainly funny when they are commenting on current issues”.

“Last year’s jokes aren’t quite as good”.

All three contributing cartoonists were delighted with this innovation.

David Rowe commented, “This is a brilliant idea and once word gets out, other galleries will be thinking about how they could do something similar.

“Congratulations National Cartoon Gallery.”

According to The National Cartoon Gallery team, the timing of this exhibition is great, as Prime Minister Morrison will be campaigning furiously in a tight election over the next few months.

“The exhibition will remind us of the highs, lows and embarrassments of his Prime Ministership,” said Paul.

“It will also change every week with some new, current cartoons appearing on the walls offering irreverent comments on the election campaign.”

The Morrison Years exhibition is in the National Cartoon Gallery until May 29.

While this exhibition is in the big, new gallery, the original Bunker Gallery will be hosting an exhibition called ‘The Art of Storytelling’ which is designed to attract a much younger audience interested in comics, animation, Manga and how stories are put together.
