Great Lakes Council’s ongoing program to upgrade The Lakes Way has seen another project completed, with works on an 850m length of The Lakes Way approximately 3km to the south of Bungwahl winding up this week.

“The work involved widening the road formation to include a one metre shoulder and reconstructing the road pavement” said Council’s Director of Engineering Services, Mr Ron Hartley.

“Previously the road was narrow and required regular patching work.”

Wire rope barriers have also been installed at selected locations where significant drop-offs exist at the side of the road and over major culverts.  Line marking will be undertaken over the next month.

“The finished work has greatly improved the safety of the road for motorists” said Mr Hartley.

“Work has been undertaken in a quick timeframe, a credit to the Council staff involved” said Council’s Operations Manager, Mr Robert Fish.

The work has been undertaken at a cost of $500,000 with funding provided for by Road and Maritime Services (RMS) under the Regional Roads Block Grant.

“Further construction work on The Lakes Way is planned to be undertaken in 2015-2016 to upgrade another section at Bungwahl” said Mr Hartley.

“Council is also in the progress of undertaking resealing works along selected sections of The Lakes Way between Bungwahl and Bulahdelah” said Mr Fish.

“Motorists are urged to exercise caution when driving through these work sites and to abide by roadwork speed limits in place” said Mr Fish.
