It is the brainchild of Kyra Ensbey from Bright Bessy Dog Training in partnership with Frankly Health Care and Pete’s Place organisations with a service focus on homeless people. Ms Ensbey had been asked by one of the medical professionals at Frankly Healthcare to visit homeless people with her community support dog Chilli. On her return journey home Kyra reflected on the time spent there and the situation. “I had stayed for some time and a few of the people had dogs and were giving their dogs half their own breakfast and I realised that the dogs need help too. “They love their animals just like us. “But they often prioritise the feeding of the animals over themselves,” she said. Kyra’s visit gave her insights that had a lasting impact. “I think most people have the wrong impression of homeless people and after I took time to sit with them and talk to them and hear their stories I learnt there is a lot of trauma there from situations such as being a returned serviceman or woman, or homelessness due to loss of employment during COVID. “I think any of us could be those people if the circumstances went wrong.” Ms Ensbey also understood the value of dogs to homeless people who may feel the dog is their only ally. “Because of the way some people have been treated they have lost trust with humans and the dog is their friend and protector and the one thing in the world they trust.” So far the reaction to The Hound Hub and donations have been phenomenal and businesses and organisations are coming on board to assist as well. But Ms Ensbey stated, “This is more than a one off drive. “Consistent donations throughout the year will make sure people’s dogs are looked after.” If you would like to support The Hound Hub, the drop off point during the week is at Pete’s Place at the Coffs Harbour Neighbourhood Centre between 8.30 and 1.30, preferably Wednesday to Friday. On Saturday at the Blue and White Vet clinic at Woolgoolga and on Sunday at the Blue and White Vet clinic in Coffs Harbour between 12 and 5 there will be a box to collect items at the end of the driveway.
