THE month long operation to dredge ‘The Gut’ of the Myall River in Tea Gardens is done and dusted.

Approximately 10,000 cubic metres of sand was removed from the river in the region opposite the Tea Gardens Police Station and transferred to the stock pile at Winda Woppa.

The last dredge of the area was way back in 1961.

The Myall River Action Group had campaigned long and hard for the dredge.

“Tea Gardens Gutway was used as a channel for timber droghers during the timber era in the late 1800’s when Tea Gardens had a population of about 1,500,” Gordon Grainger from the MRAG said.

“The Gut became a mooring area when that trade finished up,” he said.

“The MRAG would like to thank the State Government for funding, MidCoast Council for taking on this project and Mr Glen Bunny from the Department of Crown Lands Newcastle office for his support.”

Mr Grainger added, “We would also like to acknowledge the assistance and support we have received from the Winda Woppa Association in reaching this outcome.”

Next on the list of the Myall River Action Group’s projects is the state of our boat ramps.

“A number of boats ramps in Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest are in need of urgent attention,” Mr Grainger said.

“We’ve received a number of complaints from boat owners that their trailers have been damaged after using the Moira Parade ramp in Hawks Nest.”

“Of immediate concern is the oncoming tourism season, the ramp is slippery and the ends drops into deep water, a disaster waiting to happen.”
