As well as being a teacher, on his resume he can put that he’s been Captain Starlight, a circus performer, and now a world record holder.

A record holder of what you ask?

Well, Simon decided to take his love of hula hoop performing to a hairy level, and competed for the world record in spinning a hula hoop on his beard, and got it!

Simon professes that joining the circus completely changed his life.

Simon told News Of The Area, “I was so unfit before joining Circus Avalon in 2006 and have not looked back.”

“It became something I wanted to do every day and also professionally.”

“I have worked with some amazing performers and coaches and would also love the chance to work internationally too.”

The idea to go for a world record attempt came about because they are tricks that Simon does in his solo act, and when his friend Jasmine Straga, the director of the Australian Circus Festival, approached him to compete again in the festival, he opted instead to go for some world records.

Simon tells us that, “Circus is the art of doing something perfectly useless perfectly, and so while the record isn’t for being the strongest or fastest, it’s for something ridiculous and quite hilarious when you think about it, and that is what appeals to me.’

“In the circus, and in my profession as a teacher, my number one motto is “Make them laugh!”.

“If I can make the classroom fun and engaging then I have done my job, and if I can make a circus tent full of people laugh and cheer and have fond memories of a fantastic experience, then I have done my job,” he said.

Circus is perfect for anyone because you are being active (mentally and physically) but there’s not the potential stress of the rules of organised sport. You are consistently making and breaking through your own personal best.
