NOT much bowling on the homefront this week as 16 bowlers were participating in the Newcastle District Spring Carnival which was held on 4, 5 and 7 September and two others were competing in the Champion of Club Champions Pairs from 4 – 7 September.

Some ladies did have a “roll up” on Tuesday and Thursday as there was insufficient numbers for social bowls.

The District Spring Carnival was well attended, 5 Sections 54 teams in all.

Host clubs were Nelson Bay, Lemon Tree Passage, Kotara, Fingal Bay, Raymond Terrace, Adamstown, Soldiers Point, Stockton, Wallsend, Mayfield West, Bar Beach, Heaton Birmingham Gardens, Alder Park, New Lambton and Lambton Park.

Format for play Fours 18 ends, 5 games played in total.

Weather conditions were not very conducive for bowling with SW winds blowing at 35-40km/hr.

Our teams did well against some tough opposition but unfortunately not good enough to bring home any prizes.

The best performers were Karen Green, Pat Baker, Sandra Leisemann and Lynne Green with three wins and two losses.

Winners of the Carnival were a team from Edgeworth who won all five of their games.

Congratulations to Kayelene Pearson and Robyn Beaumont who excelled at the Champion of Champions Pairs held at Rydalmere Bowling Club.

These ladies qualified for this event by winning our Club Championship Pairs in June this year.

Kayelene and Robyn defeated Natasha Scott and Genevieve Delves,(winners of the district Open Pairs 2017) from Raymond Terrace in the Quarter Finals.

Unfortunately the Tea Gardens duo lost to Harbord 14 v 16.

Susan Laidlaw and Masako Sato, the Harbord team won the competition defeating Lake Cathie in the final.

Sadly reporting the passing of one of our much loved members, Joan Hanson.

We will all miss you Joan, our thoughts are with your family at this time.
