ATHLETICS carnivals are a staple in all NSW schools, with the latest for Tea Gardens Public School being held on Thursday, 8 June. There was something for every kid, as all present participated in the races, running and otherwise, throughout the mild winter’s day, as the weather, too, behaved itself. Meanwhile, Emily S reported, “My favourite part was the parachute and tug-o-war,” the two events no doubt presenting some unintended lessons in physics for the kids. “I loved the 200m race,” said Gypsy, while Samuel L declared, “High jump was my favourite, I was really proud of myself.” Leroy R energetically announced, “I practiced so hard for the athletics carnival, and had lots of fun!” “Our Year 6 kids loved the races, especially the 800m,” Principal Mark Clemson told NOTA. Other novelty events, besides the mainstay running, long jump and high jump, included the egg-and-spoon race, and the sack race, both of which are secretly excellent ways to get the kids super-active and focused on achieving an outcome… but don’t tell the kids that, it will just spoil the fun. Whether breaking world records or not, the kids also got to enjoy a classic Aussie sausage sizzle on-site. The ever-crucial House Competition ended with the following results: 1st Place was Stephens with 320 points; 2nd place was Corrie with 305 points; 3rd place was Yacaaba with 303 points; and 4th place was Tomaree with 217 points. Age Champions were: Junior Girl = Ivy-Pearl Carter Hughes; Junior Boy = Lucas Edwards; 11 Year Girls = Isabelle Yuswak; 11 years Boy = Lachlan Mills; Senior Boy = Kade O’Neill; Senior Girl = Rhani Genner. All event winners who have met qualifying heights, times and distances will now go on to represent Tea Gardens Public School at the Port Stephens Zone Athletics Carnival in Maitland on Friday 21 July, 2023.
