Tea Gardens police are describing New Year’s Eve celebrations in the area as a ‘reasonably controlled’ affair. “We didn’t have any major incidents take place,” they said.

There were still some examples of unruly behaviour, including an intoxicated man who punched a police car.

At about 2.30am on New Year’s morning the 28-year-old Hawks Nest male allegedly tried to flag down a police car in Moira Parade Hawks Nest.

“He was intoxicated and demanding a lift home,” police explained.

The police were unable to oblige and attempted to drive away when the male began punching the side of the police vehicle.

They said he then unleashed with foul and offensive language. When the police stopped to speak with him he allegedly approached them in an aggressive manner.

He was detained and returned to Tea Gardens Police Station where he was charged with resist police, offensive language and fail to comply with a direction.
At about 4am that morning police were called to a group of noisy youths in Jimmy’s Beach Car park. Some were locals and known to police.

The group was asked to stop the noise coming from their car stereo and move on.
Police said two local youths known to them decided to dispute the direction.

Both youths received an $1100 infringement for continuing their intoxicated behaviour, were arrested and conveyed home.
