A group of Rotarians joined the Clean up Australia day event last Sunday, their target to tackle Anzac Park on Marine Drive.

“The area was mostly very clean, the biggest culprits being the cigarette butts,” said Rotarian Dudley Mercer.

And the old story, many hands make light work came into play with the area cleaned up in just an hour.

“It’s a real pat on the back to locals and tourists alike that the park was so clean to begin with.”

This year marks 30 years since the first Clean Up Sydney Harbour event was started by the late Ian Kiernan.

Sadly, Ian passed away in October of last year but it was his vision which created Clean Up Australia, the nation’s largest community mobilisation effort, now firmly embedded in our national and global culture.

Since 1989, millions of Australians millions of volunteers have taken to their streets, beaches, parks, bushland and waterways to remove the rubbish that is bothering them.

More recently this has extended to the thousands who take actions such as saying NO to a plastic bag at the checkout and refusing a bag for a single use item.
