IT’S  National Op Shop Week, a time when we’re all encouraged to “Op ‘til we Drop.”

The campaign is aimed at promoting our local Op Shops as places to find that special outfit, rare book, or piece of crockery or cutlery that’s not going to break the bank.

Op Shop Week also encourages people to donate,  whether it be financially or physically by becoming a volunteer.

Diane Stillie has been volunteering at “ Vinnies” in Tea Gardens since the store first opened its doors in 2007.

“It used to be a fruit shop, but over the years we’ve expanded and now have 30 volunteers who keep the store open 5 and a half days a week,” she told the News Of The Area.

Manager, Beatrix Losurdo volunteers her services at least 3 days a week.

“I’ve learned so much about running a business,” she said.

“Vinnies also takes on interns which helps give someone training in retail, opening up job opportunities and a future.”

And if it’s a bargain you’re after, Vinnies is having a sale!

From Wednesday 24 August until Friday 26 August all winter garments are half price, with some items selling for as little as a dollar.

Beatrix Losurdo said, “We have a great team of volunteers who’ve  become close friends, but we’re always looking for more people to put on our books.”

All money raised by Vinnies goes to providing emergency accommodation, food and the basics of life for people in crisis.

The sign behind the counter of the Tea Gardens Op Shop sums it up.

“Our Volunteers work for nothing, not because they are worthless, but because they are priceless.”
