WITH the NSW State election just over a week away, the Minister for Multiculturalism Ray Williams dropped into Tea Gardens last week, with a cheque in his pocket for the local ‘Men’s Shed.

Liberal candidate for Port Stephens Jaimie Abbott said it was fantastic to see the NSW Liberals and Nationals Government continue to back the local Men’s Shed.

“A little over nine months ago, the Minister was here to hand over a cheque for $3,000 to support the incredible work of the volunteers,” Ms Abbott said.

This time around, the Mr Williams had $3,500 for the Men’s Shed to purchase a defibrillator as well as some professional training to use the equipment.

Mr Williams said he was thrilled to be back at the Men’s Shed.

“The defibrillator adds to the amazing work the Men’s Shed does, particularly in supporting men’s mental health through a variety of activities and hands-on work that support their local community,” the Minister said.

President of the Tea Garden’s Men’s Shed Robert Hughes was also very pleased with the support.

“On behalf of the Men’s Shed I would like to thank the NSW Government for the defibrillator, which could save many lives here,” Mr Hughes said.

On average, one in eight men will experience depression and one in five men will experience anxiety at some stage of their lives.

The number of men who die by suicide in Australia every year is almost double that of the national road toll.

“Men are typically less-likely to talk about issues surrounding their mental wellbeing, but the Men’s Shed provides a place where they can talk and also help others,” Ms Abbott said.

Tea Gardens’ Hawks Nest Men’s Shed is located at 25 Wanya Road, in the Tea Gardens Industrial Area and is open Monday to Thursday from 8:30am to midday.
