Tea Gardens Men’s bowls triples action

August 19: Wednesday Nominated Triples competition. Both greens were in use.

Taking full advantage of the conditions, and their opponents, were the team of Barry Goode, Steve Parry and Merv Mills with a great score of +36.

Runners-up on +26 were Warren Nicholls, Daryl Martin and John Carey who just edged out John Slater, Kevin Williams and Bob Skewes on +24.

August 23: Play was restricted to the very slick grass green with 12 teams competing. The competition was played over two games of 12 ends and to be in the winners’ circle teams needed to win both games.

The winners, Ross Barry, Terry Munright and Danny Johnson, +(19), did not have it all their way in their first game winning narrowly 11-8, but they coasted home in their second winning by 16 shots and giving them the first prize money.

Second place on +16 were the team of Warren Gooley, Noel Jackson and Keith Smith. They had two comprehensive wins with a +10 in their first game and a +6 in their second.

Rounding out the prize-winners were third placed, Doug Naylor, Anthony Grant and Sean Mearrick on +11.

In other news, bowling duo Sean Mearrick and Club Singles Champion Richard Lee did their best to promote Tea Gardens when they took on Newcastle’s best in the recent Mattara Festival Singles.

Sean was beaten in the semi-finals by T Aitchison, (Mayfield West) and Richard made the final only to be beaten by the Mayfield West player for the title.

The two teams nominated for the Newcastle District Three x Threes competition have been posted.

Competition commences on Wednesday, 2 September with the Number 1 team playing Bar Beach at Bar Beach and the Number 2 team playing at home to Cardiff.
