Tea Gardens Men’s Bowls

THE weather played an important part in the bowling news this week with the usual Wednesday Nominated Triples washed out and rain threatening through until Friday.

26 August: The sun came out on Friday morning so as to allow the Peet-Kay bowlers from Tasmania a chance to play a team from Tea Gardens.

The Peet-Kay Series, as it is known, has been played between the two rival States of NSW and Tasmania for over 50 years having its infancy way back in 1961.

The Tasmanian players are selected from bowling clubs all over Tasmania for the privilege to play in a series of bowling events against a test side from NSW and “friendlies” with other Clubs included in the itinerary.

Players are selected not only on their bowling abilities but also on their social skills and their compatibility with the overall touring party.

At Tea Gardens a total of 64 bowlers competed, 32 from each side in a game of Fours over 21 ends.

The last time the two teams met, Tea Gardens were victorious. Not this time.

The adjudicator appointed to compute the scores determined that the match ended in a draw.

If the goodwill and camaraderie was anything to go by this was a fitting result.

The game of bowls the winner by a country mile!

The players enjoyed a Country Club lunch where to mark the occasion, the Secretary/Chairman and tour leader, Max Minns, presented Country Club President Ken McKeown with a commemorative plaque.

The visitors then headed off to Sydney for two days R&R before commencing the three test series against a Royal NSWBA side concluding with the third test at Club Mount Lewis on 1 September.

Bowling Club Patron, Gary Melrose played a big part in ensuring that our guests enjoyed their stay and much praise is due to the management and staff of the Country Club.

27 August: Perfect spring weather greeted the Sunday Introduction to Bowls players today with 28 bowlers enjoying the conditions.

The winners with the highest margin were; Dianne Kiss, Dean Harsh and Beverley Thrift.

Lucky Losers were Jean Glover, Laurel Laver and Dennis Wilberforce.

Next week, Fathers-Day, there will be some special prizes for dads.

New bowlers always welcome to come along and join the Sunday bowlers.

During August each year the NDBA runs the Mattara Carnival and several Tea Gardens bowlers have taken part.

In the Mattara Triples the Tea Gardens combination of; Richard Lee, Sean Mearrick and Steven Pell, were successful in the early stages but were eventually eliminated. Great effort!

The entry form is on our notice board for participation in the RSL Nominated Mixed Pairs

that will be played as a three bowls event over five games of ten (10) ends on Saturday and Sunday 15th and 16th September.

Entry is $40.00 per pair which covers bowls and lunch after the second game each day.

Prize Money of $1000.00 has been provided by the RSL LifeCare at the Grange.

Starting time 9.30.a.m. Dress is Uniform.
