Two top Triples teams contested first place with the team of Ken Devlin, Col Amos and Mark Hair just edging out the “three leads” side of John Younghusband, Ross Barry and Peter Gurney who filled second spot. 7 July Fabulous Friday Open Jackpot Pairs was played today under a sunny sky. Twenty players participated. The Club welcomed Rian Lane, a visitor from Tasmania. The winners with the lowest margin won the money. They were John Slater and Dave Perry. Ray Prigg and Henk Faber won by too many had to contend with second. Five winning margins were in contention for the jackpot. It was not won. 8 July A semi-final of the Club Triples Championship was played today with the other game being deferred to next Saturday due to Zone commitments by some players. The two teams competing for a place in the finals were Ron Green, Steve Jones and Jeff Baker and Ross Barry, Ken Devlin and Keith Smith. At the halfway mark there was nothing between the two sides but from the 12th end Keith’s team gradually drew away to hold a 5 shot lead with two ends to play. They consolidated this on the last end with a 4 and ran out winners 22-13. They will face the winner of next Saturday’s game where the powerful Sean Mearrick side take on a determined Leigh Hunt combination. The Final will be played next Sunday with play commencing at 1.00 pm. Should be a cracker of a game. 9 July At a Special Meeting of the Bowling Club today, vacant positions on the Club’s Management Committee were finalised. The Management Committee is now to be headed by Kerry O’Brien with Max Stephens and David Garcia acting as Vice Presidents. The distinguished Gary Melrose will continue as Patron. John Slater will continue on as Secretary and Publicity Officer and the all-important Treasurer’s position will be filled by the well credentialed, Ron Drake. Col Amos comes in as Games Secretary, ably supported by Ross Barry. The remainder of the Committee will comprise; Frank Dunn, Noel Jackson, Brian Emmett and Stewart Sturrock. There is some new blood on the Selection Panel this year, headed by Max Stephens. Assisting Max will be Greg Pearson, Peter Gurney, Mark Hair and Brian Emmett. Congratulations to all. In Sunday Mixed Bowls today 26 players turned out on a beautiful winter’s day. A welcome was extended to new bowlers Don Robby and Trish Jones, visitors from Sunshine Coast who are house sitting in town, Lorraine Coleman and Paul and Rhonda Hadfield. Winners of the day with highest margin were Paul Hadfield, Peter King and Dot Monty Lucky Losers were Don Robby, Col Saillaird and Noel Jackson. The organisers wished to thank Barry Goode and Ron Webster for doing the cooking and to Frank Dunn for helping the newer bowlers.
