29 April: After a two month delay, due to the Commonwealth Games, the first round of the Newcastle District Saturday Pennant competition commenced today with the Pelican Pest Control Grade 4 Dolphins hosting Raymond Terrace at home.

The Jeff Baker combination, try as they might, just could not get into the game and after 8 ends were on the wrong side of 15 shot deficit.

They managed to mount a come-back but the horse had well and truly bolted.

The final score; Raymond Terrace 25, Tea Gardens 12.

The Barry Drayton team did not fare much better although they were still in the game at the half-way mark trailing by just 3 shots.

Raymond Terrace then put the pedal down and raced away with the match 27-12.

In the remaining game, Keith Smith’s team were unlucky not to win losing 13-14 on the last end.

The Master Board score Raymond Terrace 66. Tea Gardens 37.

There was to be better tidings with the Pelican Pest Control Grade 6 Dolphins playing away at Hexham.

It rained most of the way heading to Hexham and the team were fortunate that there was no rain during the match.

The Ron James combination was never headed in their match with a dominating performance to win 23-15.

The Danny Johnson led four humbled their opposition conceding only 7 shots.

They won 26-7.

In the remaining game, the Noel Jackson team were very evenly matched until a disastrous dropped 6 at the 10th end saw them play catch-up for the rest of their game.

They ran out of ends and went down by 4 shots 17-21.

The all-important Master Board favoured Tea Gardens 66-43.

Next week it will be a neighbourly affair with the Pelican Pest Control Grade 4 Dolphins playing away at Karuah and the Pelican Pest Control Grade 6 side playing Karuah at home.

I believe the afternoon high tea provided by the Club’s Myall Restaurant to the Grade 4 sides was outstanding.

Great stuff!

In other news, following an early setback, the Club premier tournament, the Major Singles Championship will commence next Sunday with a good field participating.

There is some new blood nominated this year and there is bound to be some surprises.
