Tea Gardens Hawks massive win over Newcastle University Sport by NOTA - July 8, 2015 The Tea Gardens Hawks scored an emphatic 58 point to 18 win over Newcastle University on Sunday. Playing in perfect conditions, and before an enthusiastic crowd, the Hawks bounced back from a form slump which had seen over 100 points scored against them in the past 4 games, including a loss to last placed Shortland. Brooke Roach pointed out in the warm up, that a win was crucial, and reminded the team of their controversial defeat by Uni in round one. For the Hawks, Carl Williams and Jack Beverley scored two tries, with Jacob Afflick, Isaiah Bower, Matty Cameron, Brooke Roach, Nathan Ruse, Mikey Nanai, and Pat Page scoring one each. Jack Beverley kicked 6 goals from 11 attempts. A strong defensive effort from Trent Murphy, Nathan Ruse and Ben Battle laid a platform. Brooke Roach and John Schultz took the ball up strongly and Anthony Cameron guided the attack from five-eight. Wingers Carl Williams and Isaiah Bower gave the Hawks a winning edge, while elusive centre Jacob Afflick tested the Uni defense all day. The “Stretch” Player of the round points were shared by John Schultz and Brooke Roach. Nathan Ruse was runner up, with Isaiah Bower came in third. The Hawks travel to Windale on Saturday for a 3pm kick off.
