FOR 16 years Tea Gardens local Sue Douglas has been donating her time and energy into putting on a community Christmas lunch for those who may not have family or friends nearby.

But unfortunately, there’ll be no such lunch this year.

Traditionally, Sue was given the use of the Masonic Hall on Myall Street to cook for up to a hundred people on 25 December.

It took months of planning and gathering donations of gifts and food to ensure a great Christmas was had by all.

But Sue told News Of The Area, “The Mason’s Head Office has told me the hall won’t be made available to me this year, so that’s it, no lunch.”

Sue added, “The hall has industrial size ovens which I need and there’s no other venue in town like it.”

For Sue, the last 16 years has been a labour of love, bringing the community together on a day when many find themselves at a loss.

There’s little doubt Sue will not be the only person who’s saddened by the loss of this Christmas tradition.

  1. This is a vital service to an area that would have a high number people needing company at a time when families usually get together. Don’t know what the excuse is for not getting use of the hall but it seems very unreasonable to do this to vulnerable people. Shame on them. I do hope they find their Christmas spirits for others.

  2. And the question is, why has the decision to make the hall unavailable been made? Do the Masons have another event planned for Xmas Day there, are they unhappy about how the hall has been left previously, or has some new person inauthority at the Masonic HO simply made an arbitrary decision without considering the implications??
