EIGHTEEN Port Stephens Taekwondo students have received a personal invitation to compete at the NSW State Championships in October, and then potentially as part of the NSW NAS team at the Australian Championships in December.

With a grand total from three rounds of 26 Gold, 18 Silver and 12 Bronze medals already this year, the students from Imugi Taekwondo are in good stead to enjoy an exciting championship season.

Chung Sa Nim Tony Gillespie, and Kyo Sa Nim Kelly O’Brien said many of the students have made wonderful personal progress this season to achieve the results they have, through many hours of dedicated training.

Tony told News Of The Area “Shonique Goossens’ performance in the final qualifying round was exceptional, achieving gold over several black belts in her forms division.”

“Chase Thoburn overcame a significant height and reach disadvantage to also achieve gold in continuous sparring.”

“Mia Gillespie dominated continuous sparring, achieving 2 gold medals, despite being the youngest in her division,” he said.

Kelly told News Of The Area, “Kenya Brown and Bryce Tuppurainen consistently achieve personal best performances, placing in most events they enter.”

“Thomas has been outstanding this year, competing against able bodied children whist dealing with the real life struggles of Cerebral Palsy.”

“Each round he gets closer and closer to a win, with regular split decisions, she said.

None of this can be achieved without the support of family, friends and local community.

The Imugis are fortunate enough to have established a long term major sponsor for the National Championships with Century 21 Curtis and Blair covering the entry fees of all the Imugis who qualify.

This is a substantial amount of money and the Imugi Representative Team is extremely grateful for this committed support.

Excitingly, this year the National Championships will be held in Sydney which only occurs once every four years.

In previous years, the cost of travel has been out of reach for some, however this year with a home state advantage they’re hoping to get the whole team there.
