The new mulcher will enable garden workers to use green waste and return it to the soil, improving soil tilth, conserving water and reducing weed germination.

The program will later be expanded to include mulching bays to hold the large quantities of mulch used at the gardens.

Tomago Aluminium has been a major funder of the project.

Other financial contributors, Orica and the State Government, were represented by MP Kate Washington and Orica Site Manager Paul Hastie.

The gardens said in a statement thousands of plants would benefit from this environmental initiative and its 200 volunteers would be relieved of some heavy lifting.

The Hunter Region Botanic Gardens on Monday expressed its sincere thanks to Tomago Aluminium, Ms Washington and Orica for their ongoing support.
