Success for Coffs Harbour Suns

COFFS Harbour Suns senior teams both had successful weekends with the Youth Men’s finals series starting and the women’s team having played their final round of the regular season.

The Coffs Harbour Suns Youth Men (under 20s) are in the final six teams of the state after a 79-64 win against the Shoalhaven Tigers in their Basketball NSW Waratah League quarter final at Sportz Central.

The Suns now play the Hills Hornets in their qualifying final in Sydney this weekend, with the winner through to the semi-finals and the final four teams in the state.

The Suns and Hornets split their two games this season, with the Suns winning by 14 points the last time they played.

Suns coach Elliot Plater was pleased with how his side closed out the game against Shoalhaven.

“We finished off well, and it was pretty tight for three quarters and then we kept our head in the game and didn’t lose our focus, while the other team got frustrated,” he said.

“I was pleased with the fact that everyone contributed, and that the boys came out with the right mindset and didn’t let them back in the game.”

Coach Plater gave an insight into what lay ahead in their qualifying final against a familiar opponent.

“They (Hills Hornets) gave us a touch up when we played them at home this season, and then we beat them on their home court,” he said.

“They’ve had a tough game against Sutherland the week before, and they’ll come out all guns blazing at home as we beat them there the last time we played them.”

The Coffs Harbour Suns women won two out of their three games in a tough triple header during the last round of their Basketball NSW Waratah League season in Moss Vale.

The Suns women started their weekend with a 63-56 win against the Queanbeyan Yowies on Saturday afternoon, before backing up two hours later with a 75-52 win against the Goulburn Bears.

The Suns went down by one point 54-53 against Queanbeyan in their third and final game of the weekend on Sunday.

The Suns women finished second on the ladder with seven wins from 10 games, as they now head into their finals series.
