More than $11,500 has been raised at an event held in Stroud for a local man recently diagnosed with motor neuron disease.  Brenton Teasdale, 30, discovered he had the disease last year after he began to have trouble with his walking and balance.

Motor neuron disease is a neurological disorder that affects the cells that control voluntary muscle activity including speaking, walking, swallowing and general movement of the body.

Brenton, just 30 years of age, and the father of three young children, was devastated by the news.

“Brenton was only given his diagnosis five months ago and we were told by the doctors that he might only have 12 months, the disease is progressing fast,” his mother Julie Teasdale said.

The fundraiser held on Saturday, January 17 at Stroud Showground was a major success.

“The Stroud Lions Club was fantastic in helping us organise it. I’d definitely recommend them,” Julie said.

“It was a fantastic day. The kids had a ball. The money raised will be a huge help with medical bills and for his wife who will have three children to support.”

The fundraiser included a car, bike and 4WD show and Brenton was able to meet one of his favourite drivers ‘Mad Mike’.

A charity auction of donated items also took place.
“The auction was fantastic so many people donated items and put money in,” Julie said.

“Some people donated their prizes to Brenton and Brenton then donated some prizes to others.  It was great.”
