WITH a packed house at Club Forster last weekend, the annual ‘Brommy’s seafood dinner’ was held for the last time.

Member for Myall Lakes Stephen Bromhead has recently announced his retirement at the March 2023 state election and the night was a thank you for his long serving career as an MP amongst the other roles he has occupied in his life.

Mr Bromhead commented that it has been a privilege to serve people in this electorate over the past twelve years.

“I have fought for funding and opportunities in this electorate over the past decade,” said Mr Bromhead.

“Often in Sydney they forget about rural and regional areas and it’s about advocating for the best outcomes in our area.”

Mr Bromhead also shared a few stories that illustrated that there is sometimes humour in parliament.

“On one occasion when I had broken my leg it was difficult to enter on the government side of the house so I entered through the opposition’s side.

“As you can imagine there was a look of horror on their faces.

“I simply explained that ‘I thought you guys needed a bit of help’,” commented Mr Bromhead, to much laughter from the audience.

Many spoke highly of Mr Bromhead through the evening.

On a lighter note, MP Bronwyn Taylor, Deputy Leader of the National Party in New South Wales said, “I’m going to miss his barbeques.”

Additionally, Federal Member for Lyne Dr David Gillespie and the Deputy Premier, the Hon. Paul Toole, spoke highly of Mr Bromhead’s contribution to the electorate and the wider community.

Mr Bromhead’s recent valedictory speech in parliament received a standing ovation from both sides of the house where he concentrated on achievements for his electorate and his various roles as parliamentary secretary and the advocating for the wider community.

We wish him well in retirement.

MC on the night was NSW Nationals state election candidate for the Myall Lakes, Tanya Thompson, who hopes to fill Mr Bromhead’s shoes after the election in March 2023.

Ms Thompson has a long association with the seat of Myall Lakes, having lived in the area for almost 20 years.

“I’ve worked in hospitality and real estate, run an award-winning small business, and been a member of numerous local business and community organisations,” said Ms Thompson.

“Since February last year I’ve been an electorate officer for retiring Myall Lakes MP Stephen Bromhead.

“My life’s work has always been about helping other people, and through my time working for Mr Bromhead, I have seen how The Nationals and Stephen have been able to help people from every corner of our electorate.”
