Staying connected through lockdowns and restrictions as a senior in the community

THROUGHOUT the various lockdowns NSW has endured over the past year, one thing remains true, many of the older members of society have been left disconnected from the family, friends and the wider community.

For the older people in our community who are feeling disconnected or alone in these uncertain times, here’s a few ideas to keep you connected.

FriendLine is an initiative by Friends For Good which offers older Australians an opportunity to call and have a free, anonymous and friendly chat with a volunteer over the phone via 18004CHATS anytime from 10am-8pm seven days a week.

Professor Judy Lowthian, head of research at the Bolton Clarke Research Institute said that FriendLine is an essential community service, particularly given current restrictions.

“Telephone support has been found to reduce feelings of social isolation, loneliness and depression and to improve quality of life.

“We are working closely with Friends for Good, who have trained volunteers ready to commence and will also provide training for Bolton Clarke team members who are working from home in the current environment.”

The Department of Health also has an ‘Older Persons COVID-19 Support Line’ accessed by phoning 1800 171 866 which offers advice and counselling for senior Australians seeking assistance because of COVID-19.

Programs like ‘Zoom’ can be used to video call family or friends, with a great guide at for use at: https://www.seniorsguide.com/technology/a-step-by-step-guide-to-a-zoom-meeting/

If online isn’t for you, join Connected Au’s Letterbox Project supported by Tetley Tea, where you can handwrite and receive letters or even make a new pen-pal.

Connected AU ensures the privacy, safety and security of everyone involved with all letters approved before being sent to the recipient.

Sign up through https://www.connectedau.com.au/letterbox-project to connect in a handwritten way.

Don’t forget the simplest way of staying connected is reaching out to friends and family.

We’re all in the same boat at the moment and could all use a phone call or text message to feel a little less alone.
