Or media@newsofthearea.com.au Or CLICK FOR ADVERT QUOTE Mr Gillespie, a Taekwondo Chief Instructor, told Medowie News Of The Area, “As a leader it is my responsibility to lead from the front.” “So I do my absolute best for my team and my family of martial artists.” Mr Gillespie who also runs Imugi Fit and was nominated by members of the fitness, support, and motivation group based in Medowie says, “Improved self-esteem and confidence in everyday life, the ability for them to function in life better is what’s most important to me.” The Port Stephens Council established the awards to provide an opportunity to formally recognise the efforts and achievements of residents. Young Citizen of the Year nominee Miss Carissa Maher was nominated for the award for her academic and community achievements while studying for the HSC and at the same living with the debilitating chronic illness Crohn Disease. Miss Maher told Medowie News Of The Area, “This past year has been one of the most rewarding and successful times of my life and I am grateful that I was able to experience everything I have.” “It has really given me the chance, with the help of mentors, teachers, and family members, to use the skills that I have learned to help more people than I could ever imagine.” “It is important to me to not only achieve my own goals but to give to my local community and where possible be a voice to the youth of today and for women.” Miss Maher has achieved so much, including first in all her HSC subjects, Medowie Christian School Dux, receiving the ADF Long Tan Youth Leadership and Teamwork Award, and participating as a Regional Minister in the prestigious YMCA’s Youth Parliament. There are five award categories including: Freeman of Port Stephens, Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Port Stephens Medal, and Sportsperson of the Year.
