TEA Gardens Women’s Bowls on September 16th was lovely spring day and saw the Club play a “Versatility” competition where teams compete in the four disciplines of bowls: Singles, Pairs, Triples and Fours.

The most “versatile” team of the day were: Sheril Johnson, Lesley Kibble, Bev Rhodes and Anne MacKenzie. Filling second place were: Kerry faber, Elke Jones, Merle Sargeant and Deyonne Page. In third place were: Pat Wilson, Christine Fossey, Lorraine Harvey and Lynn Green. Two days later on September 18th, fun and friendship was the order of the day when Tea Gardens Women’s Bowling Club competed against the Karuah Women’s Bowling Club for the annual “Ruth Bowden Memorial Friendship Trophy”. Although Tea Gardens retained the trophy, the game of bowls was the real winner, with the fun on the green continuing in the clubhouse where a scrumptious lunch was served up by the ladies of the Tea Gardens Social Committee. Their hard work was appreciated by all in attendance. If the day is anything to go by, we look forward to Karuah hosting this event next year where I’m sure the fun and friendship will continue. It was nice to have Tea Gardens President, Sandra Leisman, back home after her extended holiday. Welcome back Sandra! Next week we look forward to the start of the Club Minor Singles Competition.

Tea Gardens Mens Bowls

September 17 Thirty bowlers enjoyed the beautiful spring weather to contest the usual Wednesday triples competition. Popular winners were the team of: Neville Vaughn Max Stephens/George Winter and Laurie Welsh. Runners-up were: Graeme Watkins, Bill Thrift and John Ashton. District Triples Tea Gardens Club also hosted a round of the Newcastle District 3×3 Triples with the Tea Gardens Grade 3 side taking on Hexham. It was make or break for Tea Gardens as another defeat would see them eliminated. Trailing on the Master Board for most of the match, Doug Naylor’s team snatched a handy 4 to see Tea Gardens establish a one shot lead with only a few ends left to play. This was consolidated by Danny Johnson who converted 3 shots down to 1 up to give the home side a 2 shot lead with Pip Sullivan’s team left with that advantage going into the last end. With 2 shots down in the head and a play-off looking likely Pip, with his last bowl, converted to take the end by one shot. Final score Tea Gardens 53, Hexham 50. Grade 3 now take on Boolaroo, at Boolaroo in their next round. The Grade 2 side played away at Lorn Park with our home side experiencing their first defeat in the competition. One Tea Gardens team had a win but unfortunately the other two lost with the Master Board score favouring Lorn Park 66 to Tea Gardens 56. Grade 2 play Cardiff in their next round at Tea Gardens. A game not to be missed! It is “sudden death” for both of our sides now. September 19 The annual charity “Kneelers” versus “Grippers” match was played instead of the usual Friday Jackpot Pairs. Forty two bowlers took part. The proceeds of the day, $2,000, were donated to the ”Start in Life” organisation that sponsors children in need with their education from primary school through to university. The Men’s Bowling Club would like to thank all those community organisations that contributed to making this day a huge success. Playing with “divine” assistance, the “Kneelers” easily outplayed the “Grippers” to win convincingly 84 shots to 47. The best performed side on the day was the team of: Harry Hauben, Marcia Smith, Ron Drake and Bob Weir. The Sunday Introduction to Bowls bowlers enjoyed their annual trip away to the East Maitland Bowling Club. I hear that they had a great lunch! BRIDGE
