Karuah Mens Bowls

AS a rule, “bowling clubs” are not “service clubs” like say, a Lions Club or a Rotary Club!

They are set up by their members, specifically to foster, support and encourage their own particular activity and in the case of bowls clubs that is the sport of Lawn Bowls.

That of course, makes this week’s Karuah Women’s Bowls Club Oncology Day even more special.

Led by the Women’s Club and their ever active and popular President, Robyn Latimore, the whole club again focused on raising funds for the Calvary Mater Hospital Oncology Unit.

Bowlers and Supporters from the whole district came to Karuah, bowled, took part in quizzes, raffles, tom bowlers, and other activities, bought and ate a lunch provided by the Calvary Mater Oncology women’s support group and raised some $5,000 to help in the fight against Cancer.

We might be bowlers, but who amongst us doesn’t hate cancer and want this dreadful curse beaten once and for all.

On The competition front, our grade Three 3 x 3 team was knocked out of the comp last week, while our grade 2 team remains firmly in the Wednesday afternoon competition.

Socially, the excellent series of “Gala” or club competitions continues on Tuesday and Thursday mornings (names on the sheet or rung through by 09:30, first bowls at 10:00)and Mike Denko and Peter Green our games directors are planning ever bigger Social Saturday competitions.

One our members, Trevor Barclay, received his formal qualification as a National Level Lawn Bowls Umpire this month which will provide valuable as we have some inter club visits coming up, which should spice up the social comp and provide great social interchange with other bowling clubs in our region.

It is hoped that as part of the Karuah RSL Sub Branch participation in next month’s Veterans Health Week, a joint Karuah RSL Men’s Bowls Club and Karuah RSL Sub Branch bowls activity can be staged.

The bowlers and the Sub Branch members already have much in common.

There is a real affection for our Sub Branch members by the bowlers and this sees them keen to contribute and participate in this important Veterans Health Week.

This activity when conducted may result in a feature story in a later article.

The bowling year rolls on (pun intended!). If you see bowlers on the green at Karuah, drop by and say gooday!  The RSL veranda is a lovely place to enjoy a refreshing drink and meet some friendly bowlers, it’s a great sport.  See you at Karuah.
