BOWLS Tea Gardens Men’s Bowling August 18 The Newcastle District Bowling Association, in conjunction with the Newcastle Mattara Festival conducted its annual bowls tournament. Tea Gardens were represented with a few bowlers competing in various events. The most successful being our Club Champion, Dennis Ashbridge. In the Open Singles Championship, Dennis won all of his sectional games to make it through to the semi-finals. A real “feather in his cap” was his defeat of Ian Lean, the Newcastle Zone 2, 2013 Bowler of the Year Dennis beat Ian 21-19 in the quarter-finals. Dennis was then beaten in the semi-finals by Scott Thoroughgood from Lambton, another very well-credentialed bowler. Well done Dennis! August 20 The usual Wednesday bowls was washed out, a prelude to a miserable weather week for bowls. August 22 The Friday Jackpot Pairs was played with 30 bowlers competing in 6 games of pairs and 1 game of two-bowl triples. The winning team on the lowest winning margin, (+3) was Ross Barry and Danny Johnson. Runners-up, on a count-back were; Barry Goode, Geoff Muggleton and Kerry O’Brien, (+5). The “lucky”, non-winning team was Les Beggs and John Adam. The Jackpot number draw #5 saw the jackpot go off with equal winners; Bill Moon and Richard Lee, Barry Goode, Geoff Muggleton and Kerry O’Brien. August 23 The semi-final of the Club Minor Pairs Championship was set down for play but was deferred because of the weather. August 24 The Sunday Introduction to Bowls competition saw 24 players competing. The winners were Stewart Sturrock, Clare Brown and Bill Moon. The Lucky Losers were Lynda Richards, Dorothy Thompson and Jeanette Emmett. Thanks to the coach, John Bilby and cooks, Keith Smith and Barry Goode. A big welcome to Pam Barry for her first game. The weather cleared away to enable the Club Minor Pairs Championship to re-commence with Neil Kibble substituting for Geoff Muggleton. In the first match, Neil Kibble and Doug Naylor were off to a flying start and at the half-way mark had a comfortable 16-5 lead in their match against Col Fossey and Tony Attard. After picking up a 3, against the run of play, on the 12 end, Fossey and Attard seemed to regain their confidence and stormed home over the last 10 ends winning that stanza by an amazing 17-2. At end 20 the scores were even at 18 all. Fossey and Attard then claiming 4 on the last end to win 22-18, to clinch a berth in the finals. What a game! In the other game Ross Barry and Danny Johnson also had a comfortable lead at half-way 13-7 in their game against Peter Gurney and Leigh Hunt. Gurney and Hunt fought back and with one end to play were trailing by just 1 shot going into the last end. It looked as though the match may have to go into extra time until Barry tucked the jack around the corner in a near impossible position. Barry and Johnson proceeding to the final with a 22-20 win. Congratulations to all bowlers for some really great play. Tea Gardens Men’s Bowling Club, the home of the Mighty Dolphins, is proudly sponsored by Pelican Pest Control. LEAGUE The Tea Gardens Hawks are one win away from a 2014 grand final appearance, after defeating the Mallabula Panthers by 28 points to 6 on Saturday. The Hawks pack was dominant in some big exchanges up front, which gave the backs plenty of room to move. Jeff Wortley starred at halfback with a three try haul, and lead up work to put Aaron Waters over. Waters played a strong game, after being targeted on the wing by the opposition. Concentrating on the Hawks halves and outside backs, Mallabula were caught by elusive work from David Edmonds at dummy half in the 50th minute. Edmonds solo try was the turning point in a torrid struggle. Anthony Cameron kicked 3 goals from 4 attempts, while Jeff Wortley converted one try. Kirran Shearer took the ball up with purpose, supported by Jason Purdon and Luke Gilbert. Center pairing, Anthony Cameron and Craig Lee were tradesman like, and Mitchell Baker returned from injury to play a safety first game at fullback. Jason Purdon was awarded the supporters vote. Best in defence was Trent Murphy, whose work rate was exceptional. Jeff Wortley received the vote for best in attack, and was the “player’s player” choice. The Hawks will return to Lakeside Sporting Complex on Saturday to play minor premiers, Newcastle University in the major semifinal. Kick off will be at 1:20pm. Cessnock, who defeated Dora Creek, last week, will play Mallabula in the elimination game at 3pm.
